OPA News Release:
Major National Emergency Grant Aids
Workers In Texas Labor Department Provides Money For Airline And Industry
Workers Affected By 9/11
WASHINGTON U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today
announced a $6.2 million National Emergency Grant to aid dislocated workers in
airline and tourism-related industries in Texas.
The disasters on Sept. 11 have left a mark on our society and our
economy, Chao said. It is imperative that the administration do
everything in its power to aid those affected by the events of that terrible
day. This money will enable the state of Texas to get the services and skills
training to the people who need it the most.
The National Emergency Grant will provide re-employment assistance for
approximately 5,200 workers. The Texas Workforce Commission is the grantee and
local workforce development boards will be the project operators. The money
will supplement existing re-employment programs offered by the state. Services
include: outreach and recruitment, job development, job search assistance,
basic skills training, literacy training and job placement.
The funds will aid laid off workers from Continental and American
Airlines as well as Boeing, Vought, LSG Sky Chefs and Gate Gourmet.
National Emergency Grants constitute a major part of President
Bushs Back-to-Work package. If passed by the Senate, the presidents
package will help the economy recover by providing increased assistance to
dislocated workers, including assistance with private health insurance
continuation coverage.
