OPA Press Release:
U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. CHAO ADDRESSES ASIAN AMERICAN AND
PACIFIC ISLANDER ADVISORY COMMISSION Commission Members Sworn-in and
Plan Visit to Chinatown
WASHINGTONU.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao addressed
the Presidents Advisory Commission on Asian American and Pacific
Islanders during a swearing-in ceremony today in Washington, D.C., citing
education as the most important path to success for the next generation of
Asian Americans. Chao delivered her remarks to the 13 individuals being
sworn-in, their family and friends.
President Bush has appointed the highest number of Asian Americans
and Pacific Islanders to his administration in U.S. history, Chao said.
His commitment and support for the Asian American Pacific Islander
community is reflected in this commission. The commissioners are outstanding
individuals in their communities, and I look forward to working with them and
supporting the work of the commission.
The commission advises the president of opportunities to improve the
quality of life for the more than 12 million Asian Americans and Pacific
Islanders in the United States. Enacted by executive order, the commission
coordinates federal efforts to improve participation in government programs,
fosters research and increases private sector and community involvement.
Members of the commission are appointed by the president for their
involvement and leadership in Asian American and Pacific Islander communities
from fields such as health, education, economic and community development,
civil rights and business sectors.
Commission members also plan to join Chao in New York this weekend to
introduce commission members to the Chinatown community.
