WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao has appointed W. Walter Liang as her representative for Region X covering the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska.

“Walter brings a wealth of talent from the private, non-profit, and public sectors and has extensive experience working with diverse communities,” said Chao. “His experience and knowledge of the region and his close working relations with local communities will help Walter be responsive to those who live in his states.”

Prior to being named Department of Labor representative, Liang was a congressional appointee to the U.S. Census Monitoring Board as the western regional representative. Liang was a gubernatorial appointee as the governor’s liaison to the Asian community in the state of California, an appointee to the Small Business Administration under President George W. Liang’s private sector experience includes being the national director of the Senior Community Service Employment Program at the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging in Seattle, Wash. Liang was also vice president and manager of community development at First Commercial Bank in Sacramento, Calif., prior to becoming vice president and director of community affairs at Premier Bank in Denver, Colo.

Liang, who served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, has been a member of numerous boards and advisory councils and has received various awards for his work in public service. Liang is a graduate of California State University at Sacramento.
