The labor market in China is undergoing a great many
changes which have implications throughout that country's social, legal and
political spheres. The Department of Labor and the Department of State will
jointly host a symposium Friday, Sept., 22 to consider those changes and
emerging employment trends in China. This symposium is held by the Labor
Department's Bureau of International Labor Affairs as part of its mission to
study and monitor foreign labor trends.
The one-day symposium will focus on the situations of
workers and employers. Topics will include workforce participation of women,
labor migration, the declining role of state enterprises as employers and the
role of the state trade union. There will also be discussions on wage trends,
reemployment policies and the social safety net.
Symposium participants will be representatives of
international organizations, academia, labor and business, including the World
Bank and the International Labor Organization. Introductory remarks will be
made by the Labor Department's Deputy Under Secretary of Labor for
International Affairs Joaquin Otero and Assistant Secretary of State John
Shattuck.
The symposium will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in
the auditorium at the Department of Labor, 200 Constitution Ave. NW,
Washington, D.C. The program is open to the public without charge but
registration is required. For additional information or to register, contact
