UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial
claims was 380,000, an increase of 35,000 from the previous week's revised
figure of 345,000. The 4-week moving average was 363,750, a decrease of 6,500
from the previous week's revised average of 370,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending April 19, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 19 was 3,019,000, an increase of 74,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,945,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,979,000, an increase of 16,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,962,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 336,344 in the week ending April 26, an increase of 8,158 from the previous week. There were 267,672 initial claims in the comparable week in 2007.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during the
week ending April 19, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,976,512,
a decrease of 77,579 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9
percent and the volume was 2,448,102.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending April 12.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 908 in the week ending April 19, a decrease of 113 from the prior week. There were 1,410 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 73 from the preceding week.
There were 13,297 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 12, an increase of 691 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 20,997, a decrease of 591 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 12 were in Michigan (4.4 percent), Alaska (4.3), Oregon (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.3), Rhode Island (3.3), Wisconsin (3.3), California (3.2), Vermont (3.2), New Jersey (3.1), and Puerto Rico (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 19 were in Connecticut (+2,886), Texas (+1,937), Rhode Island (+1,779), Vermont (+336), and South Carolina (+302), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-8,102), California (-5,130), North Carolina (-4,704), Florida (-3,278), and Pennsylvania (-2,644).
