In the week ending July 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 315,000, an increase of 14,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 301,000. The 4-week moving average was 313,750, an increase of 250 from the previous week's revised average of 313,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending July 22, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 22 was 2,480,000, an increase of 11,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,469,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,466,750, an increase of 8,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,458,750.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 261,692 in the week ending July 29, a decrease of 29,153 from the previous week. There were 261,906 initial claims in the comparable week in 2005.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending July 22, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,405,724, a decrease of 97,600 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,508,852.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending July 15.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,411 in the week ending July 22, a decrease of 397 from the prior week. There were 2,278 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 261 from the preceding week.

There were 14,869 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 15, an increase of 986 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,751, a decrease of 207 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 15 were in Puerto Rico (4.9 percent), Michigan (4.3), Pennsylvania (3.1), New Jersey (3.0), Alaska (2.8), Rhode Island (2.8), Arkansas (2.6), Connecticut (2.6), Massachusetts (2.5), Oregon (2.3), and Wisconsin (2.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 22 were in Texas (+603), Colorado (+264), and Louisiana (+39), while the largest decreases were in New York (-11,926), Michigan
(-11,635), North Carolina (-7,021), Indiana (-6,070), and Pennsylvania (-5,497).
