SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Dec. 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 293,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 292,000. The 4-week moving average was 286,750, an increase of 250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 286,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending Nov. 27, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 27 was 2,135,000, a decrease of 59,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,194,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,133,250, an increase of 4,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,129,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 376,945 in the week ending Dec. 4, an increase of 108,863 from the previous week. There were 421,605 initial claims in the comparable week in 1998.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during the week ending Nov. 27, an increase of 0.4 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,207,993, an increase of 435,416 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,322,927.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Nov. 20.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,626 in the week ending Nov. 27, an increase of 21 from the prior week. There were 773 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 330 from the preceding week.

There were 18,448 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 20, an increase of 631 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,578, a decrease of 911 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 20 were in Alaska (4.9 percent), Puerto Rico (4.2), Washington (2.7), Oregon (2.5), California (2.4), Rhode Island (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.0), Arkansas (1.9), Idaho (1.9), and New Jersey (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 27 were in Wisconsin (+9,887), Arkansas (+1,659), Oregon (+1,625), Texas (+1,310), and Idaho (+929), while the largest decreases were in California (-22,463), Michigan (-3,719), North Carolina (-3,332), Indiana (-2,719), and New York (-2,284).
