SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Nov. 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 291,000, an increase of 15,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 276,000. The 4-week moving average was 286,500, a decrease of
250 from the previous week's revised average of 286,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Nov. 20, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Nov. 20 was 2,214,000, an increase of 173,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,041,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,135,750, an increase of 21,000 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,114,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 267,287 in the week ending Nov. 27, a decrease of 42,364
from the previous week. There were 295,041 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during
the week ending Nov. 20, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,788,621, a
decrease of 82,558 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6
percent and the volume was 1,871,290.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Nov. 13.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,605 in the week ending Nov. 20, an increase of 21 from the prior
week. There were 1,103 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 166 from the preceding week.
There were 18,173 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Nov. 13, a decrease of 10 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,718, an increase of 727 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 13 were
in Alaska (5.1 percent), Puerto Rico (3.7), Washington (2.6), Oregon (2.5),
California (2.4), Rhode Island (2.3), New Jersey (2.1), Pennsylvania (2.1),
Arkansas (2.0), Hawaii (1.9), Montana (1.9), Nevada (1.9), and West Virginia
(1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 20 were
in Indiana (+4,472), Michigan (+4,353), California (+4,305), Washington
(+3,724), and Illinois (+3,264), while the largest decreases were in Puerto
Rico (-676), Texas (-389), Georgia (-262), and the Virgin Islands (-14).
