SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Nov. 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 274,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 287,000. The 4-week moving average was 286,250, a decrease
of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average of 287,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7
percent for the week ending Nov. 13, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Nov. 13 was 2,052,000, a decrease of 115,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,167,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,117,000, a
decrease of 11,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,128,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 308,104 in the week ending Nov. 20, an increase of 45,542
from the previous week. There were 338,501 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during
the week ending Nov. 13, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 1,881,357, an increase of 124,027 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,002,794.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week
ending Nov. 6.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,578 in the week ending Nov. 13, an increase of 115 from the prior
week. There were 935 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of
210 from the preceding week.
There were 18,318 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Nov. 6, an increase of 1,460 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,193, a decrease of 9 from the
prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 6 were in
Puerto Rico (4.6 percent), Alaska (4.5), Washington (2.4), California (2.3),
Oregon (2.3), Rhode Island (2.2), Arkansas (2.1), New Jersey (2.0),
Pennsylvania (1.9), Hawaii (1.8), and Nevada (1.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 13 were
in New York (+1,092), New Jersey (+529), Nevada (+46), and Idaho (+2), while
the largest decreases were in California (-2,578), Michigan (-1,941), Illinois
(-1,933), Ohio (-1,910), and Alabama (-1,736).
