SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Nov. 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 287,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 290,000. The 4-week moving average was 287,000, a decrease of
1,250 from the previous week's revised average of 288,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Nov. 6, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Nov. 6 was 2,182,000, an increase of 63,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,119,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,132,500, an
increase of 2,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,130,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 262,773 in the week ending Nov. 13, a decrease of 32,606
from the previous week. There were 315,504 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during
the week ending Nov. 6, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,769,791, a
decrease of 10,500 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.5
percent and the volume was 1,839,825.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Oct. 30.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,451 in the week ending Nov. 6, an increase of 4 from the prior week.
There were 1,139 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 70
from the preceding week.
There were 17,193 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Oct. 30, a decrease of 1,005 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,404, an increase of 111 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 30 were
in Puerto Rico (5.5 percent), Alaska (4.3), California (2.4), Oregon (2.3),
Washington (2.3), Rhode Island (2.2), Arkansas (2.0), New Jersey (2.0),
Pennsylvania (2.0), and Hawaii (1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 6 were
in California (+12,968), Michigan (+3,215), Pennsylvania (+3,066), Ohio
(+2,320), and Texas (+1,908), while the largest decreases were in Iowa
(-2,224), Wisconsin (-573), Puerto Rico (-449), Arkansas (-216), and Hawaii
(-42).
