NOTE: Because of the Veterans' Day Holiday and the
Thanksgiving Day Holiday, the report for the week ending Nov. 6 will be issued
on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 8:30 a.m., and the report for the week ending Nov. 20
will be issued on Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 8:30 a.m.
In the week ending Nov. 6, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 285,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 291,000. The 4-week moving average was
286,750, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of
287,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.7 percent for the week ending Oct. 30, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Oct. 30 was 2,101,000, a decrease of 30,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,131,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,125,750, a decrease of 18,250 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,144,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 290,746 in the week ending Nov. 6, an increase of
33,183 from the previous week. There were 332,611 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4
percent during the week ending Oct. 30, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 1,764,485, an increase of 27,569 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 1.5 percent and the volume was 1,846,120.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Oct. 23.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,444 in the week ending Oct. 30, an increase of 74 from the
prior week. There were 1,066 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 27 from the preceding week.
There were 18,471 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 23, an increase of 1,203 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,705, an
increase of 274 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Oct. 23 were in Puerto Rico (6.2 percent), Alaska (4.1), California (2.2),
Rhode Island (2.2), Washington (2.2), Oregon (2.1), Arkansas (1.9), Hawaii
(1.9), Nevada (1.9), New Jersey (1.9), and Pennsylvania (1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week
ending Oct. 30 were in Wisconsin (+3,158), Iowa (+2,347), Puerto Rico (+2,044),
Oregon (+1,729), and Arkansas (+1,629), while the largest decreases were in
California (-1,536), North Carolina (-1,440), South Carolina (-1,229),
Pennsylvania (-1,111), and Texas (-794).
