SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Oct. 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 288,000, an increase of 8,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 280,000. The 4-week moving average was 287,250, a decrease of
6,500 from the previous week's revised average of 293,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7
percent for the week ending Oct. 23, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Oct. 23 was 2,144,000, an increase of 46,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,098,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,147,000, a
decrease of 10,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,157,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 254,767 in the week ending Oct. 30, an increase of 3,226
from the previous week. There were 281,932 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during
the week ending Oct. 23, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,747,578, a
decrease of 8,678 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.5
percent and the volume was 1,797,952.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Oct. 16.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,368 in the week ending Oct. 23, a decrease of 78 from the prior week.
There were 1,092 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 55
from the preceding week.
There were 17,372 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Oct. 16, a decrease of 208 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,649, an increase of 524 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Oct. 16 were
in Puerto Rico (5.6 percent), Alaska (3.5), California (2.3), Rhode Island
(2.2), New Jersey (2.1), Oregon (2.1), Washington (2.1), Pennsylvania (2.0),
Hawaii (1.9), and Nevada (1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 23 were
in California (+7,514), Illinois (+3,028), New York (+1,470), South Carolina
(+1,422), and Texas (+1,299), while the largest decreases were in Ohio
(-3,085), North Carolina (-2,365), Tennessee (-1,794), Kentucky (-1,251), and
Puerto Rico (-417).
