In the week ending Oct. 16, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 298,000, an increase of 9,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 289,000. The 4-week moving average was
300,750, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised average of
294,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending Oct. 9, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Oct. 9 was 2,218,000, an increase of 44,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,174,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,187,250, an increase of 14,250 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,173,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 239,069 in the week ending Oct. 16, a decrease of
37,883 from the previous week. There were 257,172 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4
percent during the week ending Oct. 9, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 1,727,849, a decrease of 570 from the preceding week. A year earlier,
the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,739,836.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Oct. 2.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,688 in the week ending Oct. 9, an increase of 689 from the
prior week. There were 1,324 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 223 from the preceding week.
There were 15,273 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Oct. 2, a decrease of 1,574 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,407, a
decrease of 409 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Oct. 2 were in Puerto Rico (5.5 percent), Alaska (3.2), California (2.2), Rhode
Island (2.1), Washington (2.1), New Jersey (2.0), Oregon (2.0), Arkansas (1.9),
Hawaii (1.9), Nevada (1.9), and Pennsylvania (1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Oct. 9 were in California (+4,215), Texas (+3,644), Pennsylvania (+2,711),
Tennessee (+2,026), and Oregon (+1,823), while the largest decreases were in
South Carolina (-1,605), Virginia (-1,158), North Carolina (-1,055), Missouri
(-839), and Nebraska (-70).
