SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Oct. 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 285,000, a decrease of 29,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 314,000. The 4-week moving average was 293,750, a decrease of
750 from the previous week's revised average of 294,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Oct. 2, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Oct. 2 was 2,199,000, an increase of 12,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,187,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,179,750, a
decrease of 6,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,185,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 273,358 in the week ending Oct. 9, an increase of 27,237
from the previous week. There were 300,862 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during
the week ending Oct. 2, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,748,477, a
decrease of 16,642 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4
percent and the volume was 1,724,571.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Sept. 25.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,995 in the week ending Oct. 2, an increase of 839 from the prior
week. There were 1,100 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 38 from the preceding week.
There were 17,038 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Sept. 25, an increase of 1,949 from the previous week.
Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,063, an increase of 808
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 25 were
in Puerto Rico (5.5 percent), Alaska (3.3), California (2.2), Rhode Island
(2.2), Washington (2.2), New Jersey (2.1), Oregon (2.1), Pennsylvania (2.0),
Arkansas (1.9), Hawaii (1.9), and Nevada (1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Oct. 2 were
in North Carolina (+3,358), Illinois (+2,834), Missouri (+2,096), Virginia
(+1,126), and Michigan (+1,061), while the largest decreases were in Indiana
(-2,454), Georgia (-777), New York (-452), Tennessee (-443), and Connecticut
(-354).
