SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Oct. 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 312,000, an increase of 10,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 302,000. The 4-week moving average was 294,000, an increase
of 5,000 from the previous week's revised average of 289,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Sept. 25, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Sept. 25 was 2,202,000, an increase of 29,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,173,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,189,750, an increase of 2,500 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,187,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 244,580 in the week ending Oct. 2, an increase of 11,700
from the previous week. There were 246,284 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during
the week ending Sept. 25, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,777,380, a
decrease of 6,365 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.5
percent and the volume was 1,746,546.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Sept. 18.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,155 in the week ending Sept. 25, a decrease of 284 from the prior
week. There were 1,136 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 35 from the preceding week.
There were 15,257 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Sept. 18, a decrease of 1,126 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,508, a decrease of 978 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 18 were
in Puerto Rico (5.5 percent), Alaska (3.2), Rhode Island (2.3), California
(2.2), Washington (2.2), New Jersey (2.2), Oregon (2.1), Hawaii (2.0),
Pennsylvania (2.0), Arkansas (1.9), and Nevada (1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 25
were in North Carolina (+10,352), Indiana (+2,654), New Jersey (+1,315), Puerto
Rico (+878), and South Carolina (+842), while the largest decreases were in New
York (-829), Washington (-656), Iowa (-611), California (-545), and Alabama
(-540).
