SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Sept. 25, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 299,000, an increase of 25,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 274,000. The 4-week moving average was 288,250, an increase
of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of 286,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Sept. 18, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Sept. 18 was 2,188,000, an increase of 27,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,161,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,191,000, a decrease of 7,750 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,198,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 230,470 in the week ending Sept. 25, an increase of 11,513
from the previous week. There were 220,668 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during
the week ending Sept. 18, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,796,731, a
decrease of 59,478 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4
percent and the volume was 1,725,122.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week
ending Sept. 11.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,439 in the week ending Sept. 18, an increase of 265 from the prior
week. There were 1,171 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 76 from the preceding week.
There were 16,378 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI
benefits for the week ending Sept. 11, an increase of 2,106 from the previous
week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,483, an increase
of 1,221 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 11 were
in Puerto Rico (7.0 percent), Alaska (3.3), Rhode Island (2.4), California
(2.3), New Jersey (2.3), Washington (2.3), Oregon (2.2), Pennsylvania (2.2),
Arkansas (2.1), Hawaii (2.0), and Nevada (2.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 18
were in California (+4,780), New York (+2,587), South Carolina (+2,067),
Georgia (+1,747), and Ohio (+1,302), while the largest decreases were in Texas
(-4,308), Florida (-602), Arkansas (-581), North Dakota (-343), and Connecticut
(-255).
