SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Sept. 18, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 272,000, a decrease of 17,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 289,000. The 4-week moving average was 285,750, a decrease of
3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 289,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Sept. 11, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Sept. 11 was 2,186,000, a decrease of 39,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,225,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,205,500, a
decrease of 1,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,206,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 217,528 in the week ending Sept. 18, an increase of 11,956
from the previous week. There were 237,609 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during
the week ending Sept. 11, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,878,037, an
increase of 57,697 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6
percent and the volume was 1,866,054.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week
ending Sept. 4.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,175 in the week ending Sept. 11, a decrease of 187 from the prior
week. There were 1,090 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 120 from the preceding week.
There were 14,284 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI
benefits for the week ending Sept. 4, a decrease of 2,183 from the previous
week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,265, a decrease of
451 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 4 were
in Puerto Rico (3.6 percent), Alaska (3.2), Rhode Island (2.5), New Jersey
(2.4), Washington (2.4), Oregon (2.2), Pennsylvania (2.2), Arkansas (2.1),
California (2.1), and Hawaii (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 11
were in North Carolina (+902), North Dakota (+222), Arkansas (+167), Minnesota
(+95), and Vermont (+91), while the largest decreases were in California
(-4,359), Missouri (-2,615), Kentucky (-2,261), Illinois (-2,026), and
Pennsylvania (-1,672).
