SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Sept. 11, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 288,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 292,000. The 4-week moving average was 288,750, a decrease of
250 from the previous week's revised average of 289,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Sept. 4, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Sept. 4 was 2,242,000, an increase of 47,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,195,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,211,500, an
increase of 11,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,200,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 204,809 in the week ending Sept. 11, a decrease of 30,344
from the previous week. There were 217,454 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during
the week ending Sept. 4, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 1,833,673, a decrease of 104,373 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.5 percent and the volume was 1,806,148.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week
ending Aug. 28.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,365 in the week ending Sept. 4, an increase of 350 from the prior
week. There were 1,213 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 17 from the preceding week.
There were 16,616 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI
benefits for the week ending Aug. 28, an increase of 1,083 from the previous
week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,960, an increase
of 253 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 28 were
in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Alaska (3.4), Rhode Island (2.9), New Jersey
(2.6), Washington (2.5), Pennsylvania (2.4), California (2.3), Oregon (2.3),
Arkansas (2.1), Connecticut (2.0), Hawaii (2.0), and Massachusetts (2.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 4
were in Texas (+2,632), California (+2,554), Missouri (+1,651), Kentucky
(+1,574), and Tennessee (+1,418), while the largest decreases were in New York
(-1,767), North Carolina (-675), Virginia (-482), Mississippi (-419), and
Georgia (-393).
