SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Sept. 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 286,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 290,000. The 4-week moving average was 287,500, an increase of 750 from the previous week's revised average of 286,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending Aug. 28, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug. 28 was 2,198,000, a decrease of 23,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,221,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,201,500, an increase of 10,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,191,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 230,713 in the week ending Sept. 4, an increase of 11,494 from the previous week. There were 255,938 initial claims in the comparable week in 1998.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending Aug. 28, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,940,502, a decrease of 42,681 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,931,309.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 21.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,011 in the week ending Aug. 28, a decrease of 362 from the prior week. There were 1,195 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 80 from the preceding week.

There were 15,684 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 21, a decrease of 1,550 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,944, an increase of 426 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 21 were in Puerto Rico (6.0 percent), Alaska (3.6), Rhode Island (3.0), New Jersey (2.6), Washington (2.5), Oregon (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), California (2.3), Hawaii (2.3), and Massachusetts (2.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 28 were in New York (+1,216), Kentucky (+674), Illinois (+661), Puerto Rico (+632), and Virginia (+481), while the largest decreases were in California (-1,990), Georgia (-1,756), South Carolina (-1,750), Tennessee (-1,348), and Michigan (-783).
