SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Aug. 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 289,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 285,000. The 4-week moving average was 286,500, an increase
of 2,000 from the previous week's revised average of 284,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Aug.21, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Aug.21 was 2,235,000, an increase of 43,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,192,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,195,500, an
increase of 250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,195,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 218,561 in the week ending Aug. 28, a decrease of 8,123
from the previous week. There were 233,516 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during
the week ending Aug. 21, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 1,995,772, a decrease of 32,079 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 1,990,926.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week
ending Aug. 14.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,374 in the week ending Aug.21, an increase of 207 from the prior
week. There were 1,275 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 22 from the preceding week.
There were 17,373 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI
benefits for the week ending Aug. 14, an increase of 1,035 from the previous
week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,767, an increase
of 134 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 14 were
in Puerto Rico (4.7 percent), Alaska (3.6), Rhode Island (3.0), New Jersey
(2.6), Washington (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.5), California (2.4), Oregon (2.4),
Arkansas (2.1), and Connecticut (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 21
were in Georgia (+1,538), South Carolina (+659), New York (+333), New Mexico
(+157), and Missouri (+131), while the largest decreases were in Michigan
(-1,642), North Carolina (-1,231), California (-947), Pennsylvania (-916), and
Puerto Rico (-764).
