SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 283,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 288,000. The 4-week moving average was 283,750, an increase of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of 281,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending Aug.14, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug.14 was 2,203,000, an increase of 4,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,199,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,198,500, a decrease of 19,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,218,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 224,604 in the week ending Aug. 21, a decrease of 11,888 from the previous week. There were 237,999 initial claims in the comparable week in 1998.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending Aug. 14, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,037,526, a decrease of 18,527 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,049,144.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 7.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,165 in the week ending Aug.14, a decrease of 197 from the prior week. There were 1,297 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 32 from the preceding week.

There were 16,495 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 7, a decrease of 1,006 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,885, an increase of 375 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 7 were in Puerto Rico (5.6 percent), Alaska (3.8), Rhode Island (2.9), Washington (2.7), New Jersey (2.6), California (2.5), Pennsylvania (2.5), Oregon (2.4), Arkansas (2.3), and Hawaii (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 14 were in Iowa (+566), South Carolina (+554), Minnesota (+495), Kansas (+364), and Virginia (+260), while the largest decreases were in California (-5,559), Michigan (-2,358), Illinois (-1,905), Arkansas (-1,394), and Tennessee (-1,384).
