SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Aug. 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 287,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 283,000. The 4-week moving average was 281,250, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 288,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending Aug.7, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Aug.7 was 2,210,000, an increase of 51,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,159,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,221,250, an increase of 1,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,219,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 235,150 in the week ending Aug. 14, a decrease of 24,372 from the previous week. There were 246,823 initial claims in the comparable week in 1998.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending Aug. 7, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,066,663, a decrease of 6,119 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,113,919.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending July 31.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,363 in the week ending Aug.7, an increase of 59 from the prior week. There were 1,327 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 137 from the preceding week.

There were 17,632 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 31, an increase of 1,021 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,731, a decrease of 269 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 31 were in Puerto Rico (6.5 percent), Alaska (4.0), Rhode Island (3.0), Washington (2.7), New Jersey (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.5), California (2.4), Oregon (2.4), Arkansas (2.3), and Hawaii (2.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 7 were in California (+3,245), Illinois (+2,133), Puerto Rico (+2,032), Michigan (+1,957), and New Jersey (+1,537), while the largest decreases were in Missouri (-3,283), Ohio (-2,797), Virginia (-1,409), South Carolina (-980), and Florida (-617).
