SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Aug. 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 284,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 280,000. The 4-week moving average was 288,250, a decrease of
6,750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 295,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending July 31, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 31 was 2,175,000, a decrease of 59,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,234,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,223,500, a
decrease of 23,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,247,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 260,296 in the week ending Aug. 7, an increase of 6,259
from the previous week. There were 279,621 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending July 31, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,088,327, a decrease of 60,565 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,228,735.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
July 24.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,301 in the week ending July 31, a decrease of 226 from the prior
week. There were 1,190 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 12 from the preceding week.
There were 16,605 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending July 24, a decrease of 378 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,998, an increase of 584 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 24 were
in Puerto Rico (4.7 percent), Alaska (4.0), Rhode Island (3.1), Washington
(2.7), California (2.6), New Jersey (2.6), Oregon (2.5), Pennsylvania (2.5),
Hawaii (2.3), and Arkansas (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 31 were
in California (+2,458), Missouri (+2,028), Idaho (+745), Maryland (+507), and
Utah (+266), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-7,455),
Michigan (-6,260), Tennessee (-6,087), Ohio (-5,193), and Georgia (-3,572).
