SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 275,000, a decrease of 40,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 315,000. The 4-week moving average was 300,000, a decrease of
6,500 from the previous week's revised average of 306,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending July 17, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 17 was 2,300,000, an increase of 100,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,200,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,242,500, an increase of 22,750 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,219,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 294,231 in the week ending July 24, a decrease of 74,742
from the previous week. There were 314,782 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending July 17, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,256,237, an
increase of 21,045 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0
percent and the volume was 2,332,055.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week
ending July 10.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,976 in the week ending July 17, a decrease of 669 from the prior
week. There were 1,234 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 15 from the preceding week.
There were 15,680 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending July 10, an increase of 1,720 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,966, an increase of 1,200 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 10 were
in Puerto Rico (6.2 percent), Alaska (4.4), Rhode Island (3.5), California
(2.7), Oregon (2.7), New Jersey (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6), Washington (2.6),
Arkansas (2.4), and Hawaii (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 17
were in Tennessee (+8,773), South Carolina (+8,762), Alabama (+7,318), North
Carolina (+6,742), and Michigan (+5,657), while the largest decreases were in
Indiana (-6,993), New York (-6,274), Wisconsin (-3,298), Kentucky (-3,010), and
Pennsylvania (-2,916).
