SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 17, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 313,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 305,500, an increase
of 2,500 from the previous week's revised average of 303,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending July 10, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 10 was 2,195,000, a decrease of 64,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,259,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,216,000, a
decrease of 6,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,222,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 367,553 in the week ending July 17, an increase of 6,015
from the previous week. There were 364,767 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during
the week ending July 10, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,229,651, an increase of 226,037 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,408,772.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending July
3.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 2,621 in the week ending July 10, an increase of 715 from the prior
week. There were 1,212 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 43 from the preceding week.
There were 14,109 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI
benefits for the week ending July 3, an increase of 588 from the previous week.
Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,033, a decrease of 352
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending July 3 were
in Puerto Rico (4.3 percent), Alaska (4.0), Rhode Island (3.0), Oregon (2.6),
Washington (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.5), New Jersey (2.4), California (2.3),
Arkansas (2.1), Hawaii (2.1), and West Virginia (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 10
were in Michigan (+19,355), New York (+8,756), Indiana (+8,072), Kentucky
(+5,933), and North Carolina (+3,746), while the largest decreases were in
California (-6,093), Missouri (-2,941), Massachusetts (-2,655), New Jersey
(-2,630), and Maine (-896).
