SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 310,000, an increase of 11,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 299,000. The 4-week moving average was 303,250, an increase
of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average of 300,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending July 3, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 3 was 2,279,000, an increase of 75,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,204,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,228,500, an
increase of 24,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,204,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 362,132 in the week ending July 10, an increase of 58,721
from the previous week. There were 428,977 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending July 3, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,021,419, a
decrease of 14,814 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9
percent and the volume was 2,258,033.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending June
26.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,850 in the week ending July 3, an increase of 285 from the prior
week. There were 1,162 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 11 from the preceding week.
There were 13,696 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI
benefits for the week ending June 26, an increase of 48 from the previous week.
Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,695, an increase of 351
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 26 were
in Puerto Rico (5.2 percent), Alaska (4.3), Rhode Island (2.8), Washington
(2.7), California (2.6), Oregon (2.5), Pennsylvania (2.5), New Jersey (2.3),
Arkansas (2.2), and Hawaii (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 3 were
in Missouri (+5,457), New York (+3,921), California (+3,448), Michigan
(+3,294), and Wisconsin (+2,299), while the largest decreases were in Florida
(-1,172), Washington (-927), South Carolina (-597), New Hampshire (-527), and
Maryland (-400).
