SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 3, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 294,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 300,000. The 4-week moving average was 299,000, a decrease of
8,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 307,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending June 26, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending June 26 was 2,178,000, a decrease of 30,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,208,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,197,500, a
decrease of 1,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,199,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 297,903 in the week ending July 3, an increase of 28,376
from the previous week. There were 379,374 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending June 26, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,012,515, an increase of 22,748 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,094,566.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending June
19.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,561 in the week ending June 26, an increase of 285 from the prior
week. There were 1,149 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 14 from the preceding week.
There were 13,775 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending June 19, an increase of 401 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,576, an increase of 3 from the
prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 19 were
in Puerto Rico (5.0 percent), Alaska (4.4), Washington (2.7), Rhode Island
(2.6), Oregon (2.5), Pennsylvania (2.5), California (2.4), Arkansas (2.2),
Hawaii (2.2), New Jersey (2.2), and West Virginia (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 26 were
in New Jersey (+2,761), Massachusetts (+2,239), Kentucky (+1,545), Connecticut
(+1,436), and New York (+1,288), while the largest decreases were in
Pennsylvania (-3,844), Illinois (-2,349), Wisconsin (-1,334), Ohio (-1,242),
and Alabama (-1,232).
