SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending June 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 299,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 304,000. The 4-week moving average was 307,000, a decrease of
2,750 from the previous week's revised average of 309,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending June 19, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending June 19 was 2,223,000, an increase of 3,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,220,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,202,250, an
increase of 500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,201,750.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 268,305 in the week ending June 26, a decrease of 445 from
the previous week. There were 348,842 initial claims in the comparable week in
1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during
the week ending June 19, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,002,784, a decrease of 12,876 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 1,987,087.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending June
12.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,239 in the week ending June 19, a decrease of 449 from the prior
week. There were 1,127 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 20 from the preceding week.
There were 13,554 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending June 12, an increase of 519 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,800, an increase of 361 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 12 were
in Puerto Rico (5.4 percent), Alaska (4.6), Washington (2.8), California (2.6),
Oregon (2.5), Rhode Island (2.5), Arkansas (2.3), Hawaii (2.3), Pennsylvania
(2.3), New Jersey (2.2), and West Virginia (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 19 were
in California (+3,122), Illinois (+2,774), New Jersey (+1,816), Pennsylvania
(+1,343), and Maryland (+1,013), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee
(-2,521), North Carolina (-1,581), Georgia (-1,489), New York (-1,454), and
Missouri (-1,449).
