In the week ending June 12, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 297,000, a decrease of 28,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 325,000. The 4-week moving average was
308,250, a decrease of 750 from the previous week's revised average of 309,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending June 5, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending June 5 was 2,197,000, an increase of 15,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,182,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,196,750, an increase of 12,500 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,184,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 266,128 in the week ending June 12, an increase
of 9,657 from the previous week. There were 293,195 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7
percent during the week ending June 5, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,016,597, an increase of 46,496 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,930,892.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending May 29.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,561 in the week ending June 5, an increase of 401 from the
prior week. There were 1,003 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 26 from the preceding week.
There were 12,190 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 29, a decrease of 424 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,606, a
decrease of 49 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
May 29 were in Alaska (5.3 percent), Puerto Rico (5.1), Washington (2.8),
California (2.6), Oregon (2.6), Rhode Island (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.3), New
Jersey (2.2), Arkansas (2.1), Hawaii (2.1), Idaho (2.1), and West Virginia
(2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
June 5 were in Georgia (+1,532), Missouri (+1,482), Pennsylvania (+1,084),
Texas (+978), and North Carolina (+928), while the largest decreases were in
Mississippi (-1,844), California (-1,423), Arizona (-1,154), Iowa (-1,086), and
Michigan(-1,079).
