In the week ending May 29, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 305,000, an increase of 4,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 301,000. The 4-week moving average was
304,250, an increase of 500 from the previous week's revised average of
303,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.9 percent for the week ending May 22, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending May 22 was 2,260,000, an increase of 70,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,190,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,197,750, an increase of 27,500 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,170,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 256,250 in the week ending May 29, an increase of
5,239 from the previous week. There were 248,550 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7
percent during the week ending May 22, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,027,221, a decrease of 42,186 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,901,622.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending May 15.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,037 in the week ending May 22, a decrease of 36 from the
prior week. There were 1,093 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 29 from the preceding week.
There were 13,214 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 15, a decrease of 209 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,612, an
increase of 601 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
May 15 were in Alaska (5.7 percent), Puerto Rico (5.0), Washington (3.0),
California (2.9), Oregon (2.7), Rhode Island (2.5), New Jersey (2.4),
Pennsylvania (2.3), Arkansas (2.2), Hawaii (2.2), Idaho (2.2), and West
Virginia (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week
ending May 22 were in Mississippi (+1,607), Iowa (+1,277), Arkansas (+1,064),
Oregon (+896), and Florida (+646), while the largest decreases were in Michigan
(-913), Pennsylvania (-873), New Jersey (-786), Missouri (-702), and New York
(-652).
