SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending May 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 300,000, unchanged from the previous week's revised figure of 300,000. The 4-week moving average was 303,500, an increase of 500 from the previous week's revised average of 303,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending May 15, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 15 was 2,204,000, an increase of 57,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,147,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,173,750, an increase of 7,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,166,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 249,862 in the week ending May 22, a decrease of 958 from the previous week. There were 259,125 initial claims in the comparable week in 1998.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during the week ending May 15, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,082,961, an increase of 24,153 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 1,956,659.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May 8.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,067 in the week ending May 15, a decrease of 58 from the prior week. There were 1,121 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 68 from the preceding week.

There were 13,609 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 8, a decrease of 286 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,233, an increase of 42 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 8 were in Alaska (5.8 percent), Puerto Rico (5.2), Washington (3.0), Oregon (2.8), California (2.6), Rhode Island (2.6), Idaho (2.4), New Jersey (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), and West Virginia (2.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 15 were in Michigan (+821), Minnesota (+726), Missouri (+675), New Jersey (+386), and Indiana (+328), while the largest decreases were in California (-9,859), North Carolina (-2,732), Pennsylvania (-1,554), Illinois (-1,176), and Maryland (-899).
