In the week ending May 15, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 299,000, a decrease of 12,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 311,000. The 4-week moving average was
302,750, a decrease of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average of
306,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending May 8, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending May 8 was 2,158,000, a decrease of 38,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,196,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,170,000, a decrease of 9,750 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,179,750.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 249,623 in the week ending May 15, a decrease of
24,474 from the previous week. There were 262,107 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7
percent during the week ending May 8, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,069,508, a decrease of 65,027 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,011,465.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending May 1.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,124 in the week ending May 8, an increase of 119 from the
prior week. There were 1,186 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 197 from the preceding week.
There were 14,062 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 1, a decrease of 603 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,464, an
increase of 185 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
May 1 were in Alaska (6.1 percent), Puerto Rico (4.8), Washington (3.1),
California (3.0), Oregon (2.8), Rhode Island (2.7), Idaho (2.5), New Jersey
(2.5), Pennsylvania (2.4), and West Virginia (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
May 8 were in California (+8,310), North Carolina (+4,282), Pennsylvania
(+2,126), Tennessee (+1,783), and Texas (+1,734), while the largest decreases
were in New York (-1,835), Arkansas (-867), South Carolina (-740), Kentucky
(-702), and Puerto Rico (-548).
