SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending May 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 303,000, unchanged from the previous week's revised figure of 303,000. The 4-week moving average was 304,250, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's revised average of 308,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending May 1, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 1 was 2,203,000, an increase of 51,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,152,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,182,000, a decrease of 1,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,183,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 266,635 in the week ending May 8, an increase of 14,617 from the previous week. There were 270,108 initial claims in the comparable week in 1998.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during the week ending May 1, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,140,999, a decrease of 45,025 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,032,518.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending April 24.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,004 in the week ending May 1, a decrease of 66 from the prior week. There were 988 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 18 from the preceding week.

There were 14,813 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 24, a decrease of 51 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,541, a decrease of 381 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 24 were in Alaska (6.3 percent), Puerto Rico (5.0), Rhode Island (3.1), Washington (3.1), California (2.8), Oregon (2.8), Idaho (2.6), New Jersey (2.6), Pennsylvania (2.6), and West Virginia (2.6).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 1 were in California (+2,329), Puerto Rico (+970), Arkansas (+507), Iowa (+482), and Washington (+407), while the largest decreases were in Massachusetts (-4,707), New York (-2,759), New Jersey (-1,430), Rhode Island (-1,375), and Connecticut (-1,002).
