SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending May 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 301,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 295,000. The 4-week moving average was 307,000, a decrease of 500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 307,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending April 24, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 24 was 2,161,000, a decrease of 19,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,180,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,186,750, an increase of 5,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,181,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 250,683 in the week ending May 1, a decrease of 10,615 from the previous week. There were 261,089 initial claims in the comparable week in 1998.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent during the week ending April 24, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,195,773, a decrease of 80,387 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,150,162.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending April 17.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,068 in the week ending April 24, a decrease of 110 from the prior week. There were 1,003 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 76 from the preceding week.

There were 15,018 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 17, a decrease of 667 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,163, an increase of 563 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 17 were in Alaska (6.5 percent), Puerto Rico (5.1), California (3.2), Washington (3.2), Oregon (3.0), Rhode Island (2.9), Idaho (2.7), New Jersey (2.7), West Virginia (2.6), Montana (2.5), and Pennsylvania (2.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 24 were in Massachusetts (+4,639), Rhode Island (+1,161), Illinois (+1,099), Mississippi (+573), and Kentucky (+503), while the largest decreases were in New York (-8,563), California (-4,117), North Carolina (-2,704), Ohio (-2,315), and Tennessee (-1,885).
