SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 294,000, a decrease of 20,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 314,000. The 4-week moving average was 307,500, an increase
of 1,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 306,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending April 17, unchanged from the prior week's revised
rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending April 17 was 2,159,000, a decrease of 43,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,202,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,177,000, a
decrease of 7,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,184,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 260,453 in the week ending April 24, a decrease of 26,098
from the previous week. There were 278,220 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending April 17, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,253,737, a decrease of 119,964 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,241,179.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending April
10.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,170 in the week ending April 17, a decrease of 318 from the prior
week. There were 1,069 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 161 from the preceding week.
There were 15,833 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending April 10, an increase of 343 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,837, a decrease of 315 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 10 were
in Alaska (6.6 percent), Puerto Rico (4.9), Washington (3.4), Idaho (3.1),
Oregon (3.1), California (3.0), Rhode Island (3.0), New Jersey (2.9),
Pennsylvania (2.9), and Montana (2.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 17
were in New York (+1,606), Ohio (+1,599), South Carolina (+873), New Mexico
(+498), and Minnesota (+332), while the largest decreases were in California
(-4,751), Pennsylvania (-4,607), Wisconsin (-4,364), New Jersey (-3,756), and
Texas (-2,635).
