In the week ending April 17, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 314,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 319,000. The 4-week moving average was
306,250, an increase of 4,750 from the previous week's revised average of
301,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.9 percent for the week ending April 10, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending April 10 was 2,251,000, an increase of
38,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,213,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,197,250, an increase of 16,250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,181,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 286,664 in the week ending April 17, a decrease
of 40,663 from the previous week. There were 288,059 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent during the week ending April 10, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,426,177, a decrease of 3,714 from the preceding week. A year earlier,
the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,334,635.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending April 3.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,472 in the week ending April 10, an increase of 396 from
the prior week. There were 1,231 initial claims by newly discharged veterans,
an increase of 117 from the preceding week.
There were 15,592 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 3, a decrease of 1,143 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,370, an
increase of 505 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
April 3 were in Alaska (6.7 percent), Puerto Rico (6.5), California (3.3),
Rhode Island (3.3), Washington (3.3), Idaho (3.1), Oregon (3.1), New Jersey
(2.9), Pennsylvania (2.7), and West Virginia (2.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
April 10 were in Pennsylvania (+5,683), New York (+5,270), North Carolina
(+4,417), New Jersey (+3,880), and Tennessee (+3,867), while the largest
decreases were in Minnesota (-386), Iowa (-294), Utah (-168), New Hampshire
(-136), and Maine (-131).
