SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 10, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 316,000, an increase of 14,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 302,000. The 4-week moving average was
300,500, an increase of 4,250 from the previous week's revised average of
296,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending April 3, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending April 3 was 2,216,000, an increase of
74,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,142,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,182,750, an increase of 9,750 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,173,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 324,080 in the week ending April 10, an increase
of 60,943 from the previous week. There were 294,014 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent during the week ending April 3, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,432,940, a decrease of 23,690 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,297,762.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending March 27.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,075 in the week ending April 3, an increase of 77 from the
prior week. There were 1,109 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 120 from the preceding week.
There were 16,835 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending March 27, an increase of 386 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,060, a
decrease of 373 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
March 27 were in Alaska (6.4 percent), Puerto Rico (3.6), Rhode Island (3.5),
Washington (3.4), Oregon (3.3), Idaho (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.2), West Virginia
(3.2), Montana (3.1), and California (3.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
April 3 were in Wisconsin (+1,925), Illinois (+1,251), Washington (+1,070),
Iowa (+939), and Georgia (+838), while the largest decreases were in North
Carolina (-1,584), Kentucky (-1,098), Connecticut (-878), Pennsylvania (-809),
and Tennessee (-781).
