SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 3, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 299,000, an increase of 11,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 288,000. The 4-week moving average was
295,250, an increase of 1,750 from the previous week's revised average of
293,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending March 27, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending March 27 was 2,156,000, a decrease of
30,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,186,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,176,250, a decrease of 5,250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,181,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 260,596 in the week ending April 3, an increase
of 846 from the previous week. There were 288,484 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent during the week ending March 27, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 2,473,354, a decrease of 75,879 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was
2,487,250.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending March 20.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 995 in the week ending March 27, a decrease of 54 from the
prior week. There were 1,227 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 80 from the preceding week.
There were 16,529 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending March 20, a decrease of 1,313 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,594, an
increase of 238 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
March 20 were in Alaska (6.6 percent), Puerto Rico (5.6), Rhode Island (3.8),
Washington (3.5), California (3.4), Idaho (3.4), Oregon (3.2), West Virginia
(3.2), Montana (3.0), New Jersey (3.0), and Pennsylvania (3.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
March 27 were in Oregon (+1,845), Kentucky (+606), Alabama (+531), Kansas
(+254), and Maine (+209), while the largest decreases were in Missouri
(-2,272), Maryland (-2,012), Illinois (-1,788), California (-1,499), and North
Carolina (-1,247).
