SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 27, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 289,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 295,000. The 4-week moving average was
293,750, an increase of 250 from the previous week's revised average of
293,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending March 20, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending March 20 was 2,196,000, an increase of
8,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,188,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,184,500, an increase of 2,250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,182,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 260,017 in the week ending March 27, a decrease
of 16,242 from the previous week. There were 272,808 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent during the week ending March 20, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 2,560,061, a decrease of 80,486 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was
2,524,880.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending March 13.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,047 in the week ending March 20, a decrease of 62 from the
prior week. There were 1,145 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 99 from the preceding week.
There were 17,935 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending March 13, an increase of 509 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,575, a
decrease of 394 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
March 13 were in Alaska (6.7 percent), Puerto Rico (5.6), Idaho (3.8), Rhode
Island (3.8), West Virginia (3.8), Montana (3.6), Washington (3.6),
Pennsylvania (3.5), Oregon (3.3), and California (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
March 20 were in Maryland (+1,952), Missouri (+1,556), Oklahoma (+483),
Connecticut (+405), and Minnesota (+329), while the largest decreases were in
Ohio (-2,975), Michigan (-2,333), North Carolina (-2,206), Texas (-1,447), and
Pennsylvania (-1,358).
