SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 20, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 289,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 299,000. The 4-week moving average was
292,000, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of
293,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending March 13, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending March 13 was 2,154,000, a decrease of
23,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,177,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,173,750, a decrease of 33,250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,207,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 270,138 in the week ending March 20, a decrease
of 19,408 from the previous week. There were 293,692 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending March 13, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,599,434, a decrease of 43,564 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,652,518.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending March 6.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,109 in the week ending March 13, a decrease of 157 from the
prior week. There were 1,243 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 103 from the preceding week.
There were 17,424 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending March 6, a decrease of 1,422 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,969, an
increase of 31 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
March 6 were in Alaska (7.0 percent), Puerto Rico (5.0), Idaho (4.0), Rhode
Island (4.0), Washington (3.7), Oregon (3.5), California (3.4), Montana (3.3),
West Virginia (3.3), New Jersey (3.1), and Pennsylvania (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
March 13 were in Ohio (+964), Kentucky (+479), Arkansas (+470), Alabama (+455),
and Missouri (+433), while the largest decreases were in California (-2,771),
Washington (-1,365), Illinois (-999), North Carolina (-940), and Pennsylvania
(-915).
