SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 13, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 298,000, an increase of 6,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 292,000. The 4-week moving average was
292,750, a decrease of 250 from the previous week's revised average of 293,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending March 6, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending March 6 was 2,187,000, an increase of
11,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,176,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,209,250, a decrease of 18,500 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,227,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 288,541 in the week ending March 13, a decrease
of 8,609 from the previous week. There were 298,302 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending March 6, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,655,618, a decrease of 73,312 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,608,178.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending Feb.27.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,265 in the week ending March 6, an increase of 219 from the
prior week. There were 1,344 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 76 from the preceding week.
There were 18,844 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 27, an increase of 644 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,935, a
decrease of 423 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Feb. 27 were in Alaska (7.1 percent), Puerto Rico (5.3), Idaho (4.1), Rhode
Island (4.0), West Virginia (3.9), Montana (3.8), Washington (3.7), Oregon
(3.6), Pennsylvania (3.6), and New Jersey (3.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
March 6 were in North Carolina (+3,666), Texas (+3,227), Illinois (+1,977),
Michigan (+1,093), and Pennsylvania (+964), while the largest decreases were in
New York (-7,587), Connecticut (-1,519), Alabama (-1,144), Kentucky (-883), and
Arkansas (-785).
