SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 6, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 289,000, an increase of 1,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 288,000. The 4-week moving average was
292,250, an increase of 1,250 from the previous week's revised average of
291,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending Feb. 27, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Feb. 27 was 2,189,000, an increase of 2,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,187,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,231,000, a decrease of 21,250 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,252,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 294,192 in the week ending March 6, a decrease of
3,726 from the previous week. There were 305,542 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3
percent during the week ending Feb. 27, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,744,829, a decrease of 20,158 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,721,428.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Feb. 20.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,046 in the week ending Feb. 27, a decrease of 83 from the
prior week. There were 1,268 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 157 from the preceding week.
There were 18,267 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 20, a decrease of 2,006 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,502, an
increase of 92 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Feb. 20 were in Alaska (7.4 percent), Puerto Rico (5.8), Rhode Island (4.5),
Idaho (4.1), Washington (3.9), Oregon (3.6), California (3.5), Montana (3.4),
New Jersey (3.3), Maine (3.2), and West Virginia (3.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Feb. 27 were in New York (+9,509), Kentucky (+1,166), Pennsylvania (+1,149),
Connecticut (+1,055), and Arkansas (+940), while the largest decreases were in
Massachusetts (-3,934), Michigan (-1,769), Texas (-1,384), California (-1,124),
and Rhode Island (-1,103).
