SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Feb. 27, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 286,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 294,000. The 4-week moving average was
290,750, a decrease of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of
293,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.8 percent for the week ending Feb. 20, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Feb. 20 was 2,194,000, a decrease of 94,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,288,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,254,250, a decrease of 5,000 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,259,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 295,354 in the week ending Feb. 27, an increase
of 8,726 from the previous week. There were 313,480 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3
percent during the week ending Feb. 20, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,773,615, a decrease of 10,848 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,722,595.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Feb. 13.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,124 in the week ending Feb. 20, a decrease of 201 from the
prior week. There were 1,108 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 191 from the preceding week.
There were 20,147 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 13, an increase of 615 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,351, a
decrease of 330 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Feb. 13 were in Alaska (7.4 percent), Puerto Rico (5.3), Idaho (4.2), Montana
(3.9), Rhode Island (3.9), Washington (3.9), West Virginia (3.9), Oregon (3.7),
Pennsylvania (3.6), and California (3.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week
ending Feb. 20 were in Massachusetts (+3,275), Illinois (+1,862), Rhode Island
(+1,461), New Jersey (+1,081), and Connecticut (+812), while the largest
decreases were in California (-11,323), North Carolina (-4,532), Georgia
(-3,083), Michigan (-2,481), and New York (-2,400).
