SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Feb. 20, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 293,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 298,000. The 4-week moving average was
292,500, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's revised average of
294,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.9 percent for the week ending Feb. 13, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Feb. 13 was 2,255,000, a decrease of 4,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,259,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,250,500, a decrease of 19,500 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,270,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 285,653 in the week ending Feb. 20, a decrease of
34,810 from the previous week. There were 313,367 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3
percent during the week ending Feb. 13, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,744,025, a decrease of 12,458 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,716,844.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Feb. 6.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,325 in the week ending Feb. 13, a decrease of 346 from the
prior week. There were 1,298 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 246 from the preceding week.
There were 19,596 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 6, a decrease of 2,171 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,811, an
increase of 98 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Feb. 6 were in Alaska (7.3 percent), Puerto Rico (5.5), Rhode Island (4.2),
Idaho (4.1), Washington (3.9), Oregon (3.6), California (3.3), Montana (3.3),
Pennsylvania (3.2), New Jersey (3.1), and West Virginia (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Feb. 13 were in Georgia (+2,006), Michigan (+1,966), North Carolina (+1,641),
Missouri (+511), and Maine (+272), while the largest decreases were in
California (-4,360), Illinois (-4,012), Pennsylvania (-2,859), New Jersey
(-2,695), and Ohio (-1,927).
