In the week ending Jan. 23, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 301,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 316,000. The 4-week moving average was
333,250, a decrease of 17,750 from the previous week's revised average of
351,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.9 percent for the week ending Jan. 16, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Jan. 16 was 2,356,000, an increase of
118,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,238,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,317,000, an increase of 36,000 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,281,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 365,198 in the week ending Jan. 23, a decrease of
148,727 from the previous week. There were 355,791 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4
percent during the week ending Jan. 16, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,881,078, a decrease of 3,310 from the preceding week. A year earlier,
the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,780,458.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Jan. 9.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,055 in the week ending Jan. 16, a decrease of 1,025 from
the prior week. There were 1,657 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 46 from the preceding week.
There were 20,522 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 9, a decrease of 2,375 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,702, an
increase of 566 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Jan. 9 were in Alaska (6.9 percent), Puerto Rico (5.1), Rhode Island (4.3),
Idaho (3.9), West Virginia (3.9), Washington (3.8), Oregon (3.6), Arkansas
(3.4), Michigan (3.4), and Pennsylvania (3.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week
ending Jan. 16 were in Minnesota (+1,183), Georgia (+1,051), Oklahoma (+772),
Maine (+241), and the Virgin Islands (+39), while the largest decreases were in
North Carolina (-21,826), Pennsylvania (-16,144), New York (-11,740), Tennessee
(-9,848), and Wisconsin (-9,802).
