SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Jan. 16, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 346,000, a decrease of 14,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 360,000. The 4-week moving average was
358,500, an increase of 14,250 from the previous week's revised average of
344,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.9 percent for the week ending Jan. 9, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Jan. 9 was 2,248,000, a decrease of 105,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,353,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,283,500, an increase of 8,500 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,275,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 562,101 in the week ending Jan. 16, a decrease of
151,512 from the previous week. There were 512,620 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4
percent during the week ending Jan. 9, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,897,497, a decrease of 168,426 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,875,871.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Jan. 2.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 3,076 in the week ending Jan. 9, an increase of 1,811 from
the prior week. There were 1,700 initial claims by newly discharged veterans,
an increase of 566 from the preceding week.
There were 22,988 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 2, an increase of 3,233 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,269, an
increase of 800 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Jan. 2 were in Alaska (6.6 percent), Puerto Rico (5.0), Rhode Island (5.0),
Idaho (4.2), Washington (4.2), Arkansas (4.1), Oregon (4.1), Montana (3.8),
Pennsylvania (3.8), and West Virginia (3.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Jan. 9 were in North Carolina (+33,640), California (+17,289), Tennessee
(+15,954), Alabama (+14,912), and Ohio (+12,965), while the largest decreases
were in Massachusetts (-2,294), Wisconsin (-2,091), New Hampshire (-1,302),
Kentucky (-702), and Nebraska (-184).
