SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Jan. 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 350,000, a decrease of 22,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 372,000. The 4-week moving average was 327,750, an increase
of 5,500 from the previous week's revised average of 322,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Dec. 26, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's revised rate of 1.8 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Dec. 26 was 2,334,000, an increase of 121,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,213,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,251,250, an increase of 20,250 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,231,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 500,579 in the week ending Jan. 2, an increase of 57,701
from the previous week. There were 479,609 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1998.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during
the week ending Dec. 26, an increase of 0.3 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,499,326, an increase of 374,404 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,595,976.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending
Dec. 19.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,554 in the week ending Dec. 26, an increase of 68 from the prior
week. There were 965 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of
395 from the preceding week.
There were 20,407 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI
benefits for the week ending Dec. 19, an increase of 251 from the previous
week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,301, a decrease of
1,793 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 19 were
in Alaska (5.5 percent), Puerto Rico (4.1), Washington (3.4), Idaho (3.1),
Oregon (3.0), Rhode Island (2.9), Montana (2.8), California (2.7), Pennsylvania
(2.6), and New Jersey (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 26
were in Wisconsin (+14,187), Pennsylvania (+10,055), Illinois (+8,098),
Kentucky (+7,860), and Ohio (+7,356), while the largest decreases were in Texas
(-4,169), Georgia (-3,104), California (-2,910), Alabama (-2,411), and Virginia
(-2,283).
