SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Dec. 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 287,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 300,000. The 4-week moving average was 307,250, a decrease of
3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 310,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9
percent for the week ending Dec. 12, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Dec. 12 was 2,228,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,244,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,253,750, an
increase of 12,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,241,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 342,475 in the week ending Dec. 19, a decrease of 15,630
from the previous week. There were 369,441 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending Dec. 12, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,306,320, an increase of 116,379 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,313,861.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending
Dec. 5.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,906 in the week ending Dec. 12, an increase of 68 from the prior
week. There were 1,391 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 148 from the preceding week.
There were 21,533 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI
benefits for the week ending Dec. 5, an increase of 433 from the previous week.
Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,295, a decrease of 934
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 5 were
in Puerto Rico (6.7 percent), Alaska (5.5), Washington (3.4), Oregon (3.2),
California (2.9), Idaho (2.9), Arkansas (2.8), Rhode Island (2.8), Montana
(2.7), and Pennsylvania (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 12
were in Virginia (+2,870), Texas (+2,541), Maine (+1,876), Kansas (+957), and
Ohio (+725), while the largest decreases were in California (-18,657), North
Carolina (-10,414), Pennsylvania (-7,254), New York (-6,753), and Texas
(-4,489).
