In the week ending Dec. 12, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 296,000, a decrease of 31,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 327,000. The 4-week moving average was
309,250, a decrease of 11,000 from the previous week's revised average of
320,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.9 percent for the week ending Dec. 5, unchanged from the prior week's
revised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Dec. 5 was 2,249,000, a decrease of 6,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,255,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,242,750, an increase of 1,250 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,241,500.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 353,857 in the week ending Dec. 12, a decrease of
67,916 from the previous week. There were 373,960 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent during the week ending Dec. 5, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,194,798, a decrease of 129,837 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,188,930.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the
week ending Nov. 28.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,842 in the week ending Dec. 5, an increase of 227 from the
prior week. There were 1,526 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 595 from the preceding week.
There were 21,152 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 28, an increase of 1,947 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,378, an
increase of 2,558 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Nov. 28 were in Puerto Rico (8.0 percent), Alaska (5.7), Washington (3.4),
Oregon (3.3), Arkansas (2.9), California (2.9), Idaho (2.8), West Virginia
(2.8), Pennsylvania (2.6), and Rhode Island (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Dec. 5 were in California (+26,231), North Carolina (+16,868), Pennsylvania
(+12,587), South Carolina (+8,383), and New York (+8,170), while the largest
decreases were in Wisconsin (-8,660), Massachusetts (-649), Oregon (-616),
Idaho (-514), and Texas (-398).
