SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Dec. 5, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 314,000, an increase of 1,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 313,000. The 4-week moving average was
316,750, a decrease of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of
319,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8
percent for the week ending Nov. 28, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Nov. 28 was 2,217,000, a decrease of 66,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,283,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,230,250, an
increase of 5,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,224,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 405,156 in the week ending Dec. 5, an increase of 110,000
from the previous week. There were 402,528 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1997.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending Nov. 28, an increase of 0.3 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,286,118, an increase of 421,119 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,315,076.
Extended benefits were available in Puerto Rico during the week ending
Nov. 21.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,613 in the week ending Nov. 28, a decrease of 126 from the prior
week. There were 931 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of
352 from the preceding week.
There were 19,253 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Nov. 21, a decrease of 344 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,949, a decrease of 1,560 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 21 were
in Alaska (5.0 percent), Puerto Rico (4.1), Washington (3.0), Oregon (2.8),
California (2.5), Montana (2.4), Rhode Island (2.4), Idaho (2.3), Arkansas
(2.2), Hawaii (2.2), and Pennsylvania (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 28 were
in Wisconsin (+9,426), Massachusetts (+2,084), Oregon (+1,867), Idaho (+889),
and Oklahoma (+823), while the largest decreases were in California (-14,797),
Michigan (-4,185), Illinois (-3,847), New Jersey (-3,115), and Pennsylvania
(-2,790).
